every year Canada issues 1.3 million visitor visas
Every year Canada approves more than one million multiple entry visa applications and welcomes more than 20 million people who visit Canada as tourists. Among these visitors are foreign workers, who are important to Canada’s economic growth, students, who are attracted by the quality and diversity of Canada’s education system, and other visitors who come to Canada for personal reasons.
Canada admits as permanent residents more than 40,000 individuals who previously held work permits under the temporary foreign worker program. On the other hand, Canada ranks top 10 among international education destinations, and unlike many other destinations, has a clear pathway to permanent residence and citizenship upon graduation.
Meanwhile, international tourism injects more than $15 bln into Canada’s economy every year.

If you wish to enter Canada on a temporary basis, you are required to have a visitor visa, unless you are a citizen of a visa exempt country. If you are a citizen of a visa exempt country, you will need to obtain eTA (electronic Travel Authorization) before your departure. You do not need an eTA if you are a citizen of the USA. If you are a green card holder in the USA, you need an eTA to enter Canada.
Although, a visa may be given for a longer period, with a visitor visa you are authorized to stay only for a certain period, usually 6 months. If you would like to stay for a longer period, you have to apply for an extension of stay.
